Elements of Competency Performance Criteria              
Element: Prepare for timber finger jointing operation
  • Determine job requirements from work order or instruction, and where required, seek clarification from appropriate personnel
  • Confirm workplace health and safety and environmental protection practices and/or procedures for task, including use of personal protective equipment
  • Confirm legislation, standards and codes of practice relevant to finger jointing operations
  • Identify and assess hazards and take actions to mitigate risks related to operation of finger jointing machinery
  • Complete machine pre-operational checks according to manufacturer instructions and workplace procedures
  • Check upstream and downstream processing stages to ensure readiness for production
  • Communicate with team members, if applicable, to coordinate work operations
  • Confirm quality and quantity of raw materials for production requirements
       
Element: Perform in-feed operations
  • Carry out machine start-up procedures according to manufacturer instructions and workplace procedures
  • Remove foreign matter that could affect cutters and saws
  • Identify and confirm cross-section of cleats/shooks to match finger jointing machine set-up
  • Load cleats/shooks to conveyor
  • Reject cleats/shooks not meeting grading requirements
  • Feed cleats/shooks to jointing operation
       
Element: Monitor timber finger jointer operation
  • Run automatic jointing process and regularly check correct operation of all sections
  • Maintain in-feed rate to match capability of machine and production requirements
  • Monitor product quality regularly and make required adjustments
  • Operate finger jointer to minimise misfeeding
  • Check and adjust settings for glue curing
  • Clean and fill glue spreader according to manufacturer instructions and workplace procedures
  • Clear work area regularly according to workplace procedures
  • Identify routine processing and equipment faults and resolve or report to appropriate personnel
       
Element: Perform out-feed operations
  • Monitor finger jointed product quality to identify defects
  • Remove defective finger jointed product for recycling, reuse or disposal
  • Stack, package and label finger jointed products
  • Complete production and quality records and report according to workplace procedures
       
Element: Perform post-operation checks of finger jointer
  • Shut down and isolate finger jointing machine according to workplace safety procedures
  • Clean machine according to manufacturer instructions
  • Conduct visual inspection of machine according to workplace procedures
  • Check condition of blades and cutters
  • Record and report faults and maintenance requirements to appropriate personnel
